‘Working the Scene’
We had a short workweek of three days with Kerry Fox and Ian Sellar where the ten of us got another chance to work a scene from our respective scripts. We had about an hour to work with some Dutch actors kind enough to volunteer.
I decided to use this workshop as a chance to gauge my current directing ability with regards to ‘Shelter‘ instead of just merely adopting someone else’s techniques for directing. Simultaneously, I also tried to apply what I learned about directing from Judith Weston.
I was very happy with the process and our result – I felt like I connected with the actors and together we were able to discover some exciting layers to the scene and characters.
Some of what Judith taught, like the power of personal stories or the use of imagery, came up in my work with the actors in an organic way instead of as a ‘technique’ or magic trick and I think this way of conversing about the scene was a very helpful kind of ‘shorthand’.
Next week is another chance to direct a scene and we’ll actually be acting and shooting for one another – very exciting – I’ll keep you updated -
