Day 20 of 30 Poems/30 Days

‘My Son

I have lost the boy,
my child, my son;
the baby who cradled my heart,
the man who ran into the stars.

But I tried to follow him,
into the woods,
under the forest,
to where the sky was born.

From afar I saw a weight
like the horizon on his shoulders,
making his footsteps deep in the mud,
making his eyes deep in thought.

In that moment
he was only breath,
like a bag of air,
drifting away into the trees.

I stretched my arm
the fingers straight
but the boy was lost
his eyes in the heavens.

I have lost the boy,
my child, my son;
the baby who held my heart,
the man who loved the stars.
