Day 41 of 50 Poems/50 Days

‘Stern & Bow’

I beat my chest with an open hand,
God taught me no words for this pain,
and despite my faith it feels like
heaven has set sail.

It has abandoned me!
As if the ship needs no captain,
as if I’m an anchor with no weight,
a boy with no talent.

I set my shoulders aside,
tattoo them with the wars
I’ve fought in my head,
and that I still struggle to fight –

And I follow the drawings,
like a map to find my way,
back, forward, back,
in circles, yes, but I’m traveling all the same.
